E. Let's understand the text:

1) Where did Lencho live ?

Answer: 

Lencho lived in the only house in the entire valley, situated on the crest of a low hill. From there, he could see the river and his ripe cornfields.

2) What did Lencho hope for ?

Answer:

Lencho hoped for a good rainfall because his ripe corn crop needed rain to produce a good harvest. He believed that a shower would save his crops and ensure a successful harvest. 

3) What did Lencho say about the raindrops ?

Answer:

Lencho said that the raindrops were like new coins. He compared the big raindrops to ten-cent pieces and the small raindrops to five-cent pieces because he believed the rain would bring him a rich harvest.

4) How did the rain change ?

Answer:

The rain soon changed into a hailstorm. Instead of gentle raindrops, large hailstones began to fall, destroying Lencho's entire crop within an hour.

5) What happened to Lencho’s corn fields ?

Answer:

Lencho's cornfields were completely destroyed by the hailstorm. The hailstones ruined all the crops, leaving not a single leaf, flower, or grain. As a result, Lencho expected no harvest that year.

Answer:

Lencho kept looking at the sky throughout the morning because he was expecting rain. His ripe corn crop needed a good shower, and he hoped that the rain would bring a rich harvest.

(ii) Why was the field white after the storm ?

Answer:

The field was white after the storm because it was covered with hailstones. The hail lay on the ground like a layer of salt, making the entire field look white.

(iii)  Why did Lencho say the raindrops were like ‘new coins’ ?

Answer:

Lencho said the raindrops were like "new coins" because he believed the rain would bring a good harvest and more money. He compared the big raindrops to ten-cent coins and the small raindrops to five-cent coins, as he thought the rain would make him rich.

(iv) Why did Lencho prefer locusts to the storm ?

Answer:

Lencho preferred locusts to the hailstorm because locusts would have destroyed only part of his crop, while the hailstorm completely destroyed his entire cornfield. He felt that the hailstorm caused far greater damage than a swarm of locusts could have done.

(v) Did Lencho try to find out who had sent the money to him ? Why / Why not

No, Lencho did not try to find out who had sent the money. He had complete faith in God and believed that the money had been sent by God in answer to his prayer. Therefore, he never doubted its source.

(vi) What would be the reaction of the post office employees when they read
the second letter ?

Answer:

When the post office employees read Lencho's second letter, they would have been surprised, hurt, and amused. They had collected money to help him, but instead of thanking them, Lencho accused them of stealing the remaining money and called them "a bunch of crooks." They would have felt disappointed because their kind act was misunderstood.

Answer:

(iii) What was the postmaster like ?

Answer:

The postmaster was kind, generous, and sympathetic.

(iv) Why did the postmaster send money to Lencho ?

Answer:

The postmaster sent money to Lencho because he was deeply impressed by Lencho's strong faith in God. He wanted to help Lencho in his difficult time and ensure that his faith remained unshaken. Therefore, he collected money from his employees, his friends, and contributed part of his own salary before sending it to Lencho.

(v) What does the expression ‘an act of charity’ mean ?
